How to Track Chauffeurs in Real Time (Without Being Creepy)

Live GPS tracking is now standard for corporate chauffeur clients. Here's how to do it right — for dispatch, customer experience and driver trust.

Why real-time tracking matters

  • Corporate clients demand it — most RFPs now require live vehicle tracking with API access.
  • Customer experience — a live tracking link replaces 5 "where are you?" calls per job.
  • Dispatch efficiency — no more phoning drivers to ask ETAs.
  • Safety & duty of care — evidence for insurance and incident review.

The 4 layers of tracking

  1. Driver app GPS — reports location every 5–15s when a job is active.
  2. Dispatch map — every vehicle visible with job status colour code.
  3. Customer share link — one-off URL, expires after drop.
  4. Corporate API — feed live location into the client's TMS.

Doing it right

  • Track only during active jobs, not driver personal time.
  • Be transparent with drivers — explain what's tracked and when.
  • Retain location history 30–90 days, then purge.
  • GDPR/CCPA: mention tracking in your driver contract and privacy policy.

Common mistakes

  • 24/7 tracking of drivers off-shift — legal risk in most jurisdictions.
  • No customer share link — you're still fielding "where are you?" calls.
  • Battery-draining apps — driver disables GPS and you're blind.

What good tracking looks like on Chauffix

  • Driver goes on-duty → GPS on
  • Job assigned → status colour changes on dispatch map
  • Customer gets SMS with live tracking link
  • Job completed → GPS stops within 5 minutes
