How to Start a Chauffeur Business: A Step-by-Step Playbook

From licensing and first vehicle to your first 10 bookings — the practical launch guide for new chauffeur operators.

Who this is for

Solo drivers and small teams launching a chauffeur or executive transfer business. Skip the fluff — this is the sequence that works.

1. Pick your niche

  • Airport transfers — steady, price-competitive, easy to market.
  • Corporate ground travel — highest margin, hardest to win.
  • Weddings & events — seasonal, premium pricing.
  • Hourly executive hire — long jobs, low fuel per £.

Pick one to lead with. You can add the rest later.

2. Legal & licensing

  • Register the company (LLC / Ltd)
  • Local private-hire / TCP / PSV / TLC operator licence
  • Commercial insurance (hire & reward, not personal)
  • Driver background checks + medical where required
  • VAT / sales tax registration threshold

3. The first vehicle

  • Buy used, low-mileage executive saloon (E-Class, 5 Series, XF) or MPV (V-Class, Vito).
  • Black exterior, black leather. Non-negotiable for corporate.
  • Fit dashcam, phone charger, water, tissues, mints, umbrella.

4. Pricing

  • Airport transfers: fixed by zone.
  • Hourly: 3-hour minimum, £45–£85/hr depending on city.
  • Add wait time, tolls, meet-and-greet, extras.

5. Booking channel — before marketing

Before you spend a penny on ads, set up:

  • Booking website with instant online quote
  • WhatsApp Business number
  • Google Business Profile with photos
  • Stripe for card payments + pre-auth

Chauffix gives you all four in a week.

6. First 10 bookings

  • List on Google Maps, Trustpilot, TripAdvisor
  • 3 hotel concierges (drop a card and a bottle)
  • 1 relocation agent
  • 1 wedding planner
  • LinkedIn post to your network

7. When to hire a driver

Once you personally can't take one more job without turning revenue away — typically at 20–25 jobs/week. Not before.

Common launch mistakes

  • Buying a new car on finance before revenue
  • Skipping the operator licence "for now"
  • Cash-only payments
  • No online quoting — every booking is a phone call

Run the numbers first, get licensed, then market.
